7 Tips for keeping you carpets attractive

Basic tips for keeping your carpets clean and attractive.

Keeping Your Carpet Clean and Attractive

Your carpet represents a significant investment. Keeping all your carpets clean and new looking is integral to enhancing the overall look and appeal of your home. It’s essential to take proper care of them to ensure their longevity. The following are some tips to help you keep your carpets beautiful for many years to come.

Clean Your Carpets Frequently

Dirt and oily residue on your carpet will attract more dirt. Walking on the dirty areas will wear down the carpet fibers and carpet base. It’s best to vacuum your carpets frequently to remove as much loose dirt as possible. You want to get down into the fibers and pull the dirt out before it becomes firmly embedded.

Remove Stains As Soon As They Occur

The longer a stain is allowed to dry and harden, the more difficult it is to remove. Whether liquid- or oil-based, stains saturate the fibers. They can be cause by dirty shoes in high traffic areas as well as by accidental spills.

Scrape Up Dried Soil

You may have to scrape some stains caused by solid deposits. Soil or dirt can dry into small clumps. Use a blunt metal object that won’t damage your carpet to break up the dried stain. Once it has been loosened, the particles can be vacuumed up.

Spot Test Cleaning Agents and Stain Removers

Not all carpets are made of the same material, and they react differently to different types of chemical cleaners. Always spot test a stain removal agent in a hidden area of the carpet before you apply it to a critical area. Let the test area dry properly before proceeding to use the cleaning agent on the visible area of your carpet.

Read and Follow the Instructions on Chemical Cleaning Agents

Before using a harsh spot remover or chemical cleaner, test it properly on a hidden area of the carpet. Always try a gentle cleaner first. If that doesn’t work, try a stronger product.

Be sure to read and follow the instructions provided with the spot remover. They should include recommendations for applying different strengths
and list the kinds of stains that can be effectively removed.

Most strong spot removers are either high acid or high alkaline products. After using one of these agents, neutralize the area by applying the neutralizing agent recommended in the instructions. If a neutralizing agent is not specified, use water and rinse the area thoroughly.

Minimize Detergent Residue

When you use a detergent or carpet shampoo to clean your carpet, a residue will probably be left behind in the carpet fibers. This residue may show up as a fine powder in the fibers and tends to attract dirt. It’s important to remove as much of the residue as possible after you clean your carpet. Vacuuming afterwards often isn’t enough. You should use an extraction process with rotary scrubbing to thoroughly clean the residue out of the carpet fibers.
